If timed right, you can ski this side of Lookout Mountain area at Northstar, fondly known as the 'White Rabbit.' The requirements are rarely optimal enough for the resort to allow skiers in. So, on this sunny day, I snuck under the rope and boot-packed it a few feet over to my hidden lunchtime Spring vista. But it wasn't just any day on the slopes. I found myself having to explain to the kind Ski-Patrolman patiently waiting for me to return back to my skis, why I was there. “Didn’t you see the rope?”, he asked. Telling him I had only gone to take a photo and would never stray into hazardous terrain, for any other reason, didn't seem to help. He was adamant I left that track in the 102 inches of fresh pow, luring other skiers to follow. Luck was with me; his generous offer to let me off the hook and not pull my pass this time was truly appreciated. All present: the Backside, the base of the Promised Land Express Chairlift, Sawtooth Ridge, Mt. Pluto, Squaw, and Needle Peak. Just out of the frame, behind me, stands a tall pine tree like a proud sentry; impressive with its bleached and petrified trunk, impersonating a white rabbit's whisker. If you want to connect with this rare 'Alice in Wonderland' feeling, sometimes you must follow the White Rabbit down the rabbit hole!
