The Greater White-fronted Goose (Anser albifrons), also known as the ‘Speck,’ is a magnificent creature. These birds are highly alert and vigilant around humans, making them a challenging subject for photographers and hunters alike. From their flamboyant call and ostentatious chatter to their unique 'clown-like' facial markings, speckled chests, and vibrant orange feet; every aspect of their appearance is truly one-of-a-kind. Despite their impressive size, they move with a graceful beauty that's hard to ignore. When I noticed this flock nestled in some harvested corn, I was still determining if this time I could get close enough. Slow and silent, I crept towards them, eventually chest and elbows low in the mud like a cheetah stalking a gazelle; I managed to get about 30 yards away and observed them for a while. When they saw me, I got one shot, and a moment later, the dance was over, and the flurry of heads, tails, and wings vanished.
