I previsualized this shot by using Google Earth to find an intriguing composition while integrating the diagonal sweep of the tree lined creek running by the winery. I wanted the distant Mt Diablo (elevation 3,848’) to be the anchor for the photograph, which rises 3,100’ above the surround foothills. The 750 windmills of the Rio Vista windfarm can be seen clearly, 25 miles away, on the far right horizon.
I had been asking a friend to take me up on a helicopter run for about 4 weeks. The December storms delayed my opportunity until one day, after a week of rain, the storm cleared, and the temperature was in the 30’s. The frost can still be seen in the shadowed protected areas below some trees. It was shot at approximated 1,200 feet in elevation. On the left horizon, you can almost feel the cool Delta fog and mist as it drifts over the Central Valley. The following next two weeks, Mt Diablo was shrouded in haze.
For nearly three decades, the Lange family has proudly practiced the art of viticulture. Passionately practicing sustainable winegrowing is their all encompassing approach, concerned with the health of the vineyard and its surrounding natural environment.
