Martis Valley Bridge
This portion of the Martis Valley Loop Trail is a true gem, offering spectacular mountain views that will take your breath away. It is part of the 17.9-mile Tomkins Memorial Trail (T.M.T.), built in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Northstar-at-Tahoe in 2014.
As you meander along the trail, you'll be surrounded by natural Willow, potent Sagebrush, and tall grasses. Stunning 360-degree mountain views stretch as far as the eye can see, from the snow-peaked Sierra and Carson ranges that surround the valley, to the distant East where the Mount Rose Wilderness beckons, the vistas are truly awe-inspiring.
Sunset runs on this trail are particularly magical, with the sky painted in lovely shades of pink, orange, and purple that reflect off the mountain peaks. Truckee is known for its cold temps that usually dip lower than most places on Earth. Freezing temperatures have been observed every month of the year in Truckee; there are an average of 228 nights per year with lows of 32 °F (0 °C) or lower, seven more than Fairbanks and only eight fewer than Nome. Fortunately, the T.M.T. is one of the first trails to melt out in the spring and also a fantastic place to check out fall colors.
The trail is a welcome change for runners, or mountain bike riders used to the popular severe terrain of other runs or rides in the Truckee-Tahoe area. While it may lack elevation change, it more than makes up for with its abundant wildlife and stunning vistas. There's a lot of water for dogs to enjoy and some picnic tables along the way to enjoy lunch with friends or family. As you cross the Blide Bros Bridge (in the photo), which replaced the original Frank's Fish Bridge in 2014 to withstand ten and 100-year flood hazard events, you'll be treated to the soothing sounds of the meandering stream that flows up and over the hill. All combined, makes this a must-visit to experience the beauty and tranquility of Truckee's Martis Valley.
