This location is one of my lifetime favorites to getaway. The unique smell of the fragrant Kaua’I forest, the sounds of the birds, and the sheer ‘mana’ of this place are like no other. I have visited this spot over 30 times in the past 35 years. This particular morning, on a recent venture with my sister, the rare early morning light and mist was simply phenomenal.
In the center of the image, you can see the two-tier Waipo'o Falls dropping 800 feet into the Canyon below. The crest of this waterfall is another amazing spot, with a magical ginger pond and 2 small pools to swim in. Also, see if you can glimpse the helicopter in the far distance over the last ridge on the center right, that soon approached us, and a few minutes later, flew merely a few a hundred feet below us.
This is the past homestead site of the Crockett Family. The home was once here, at the top of the Waimea Canyon, near Halemanu Ridge, and somewhat beyond the Pu'u Ka Pele lookout, about 300’ off Highway 550. The house had been destroyed by fire many years ago, although, the large clover lawn, many unique orchids, fruit trees, and plants they propagated are still very apparent. The spot where this shot is taken is the exact view from their kitchen window, of which had Jukebox glass as windows.
The site is private, and revered and coveted dearly by many locals. I will hold this special place close to my heart, forever.
